CASE STUDY: WATFORD BID

This project was a £2.3m redesign of Watford High Street, leading to the new £200m intu extension.

The objective was to ensure the intu shopping centre, the largest in England, and town centre are seen as one. The BID brought together the Watford Borough Council, Herts County Council, intu, Laing O’Rouke, Arriva, Murrill Construction, to facilitate a new high street design.

The strength of this partnership provided the opportunity for a holistic approach to town regeneration and the opportunity for the BID, Council and Herts CC to apply to the LEP for £5m of grant funding for further improvements in the town (linking Watford Junction to town), which was successfully approved in July 2018.

Cost to the BID - £30,000 into a £2.3m project. Clear outputs included: Improved street scape and town centre environment, linking town to intu and ensuring a destination of quality.

Facilitated take up of street pavement licenses for new businesses and existing businesses. Significant reduction in vehicle access and subsequent environmental improvements. Developed relationship with LEP, which has contributed to the town getting there voice heard.
